No. 22 Grenadiers Sweep Saturday Doubleheader With Huntington

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast baseball team needed late-inning heroics for a comeback win in game one of Saturday's doubleheader and then got a three-hit shutout in game two for a sweep of Huntington.

In game one, the Grenadiers got on the board first with a two-run second inning. Brody Tanksley led off with a double and Jake Scott walked. Both runners moved into scoring position after a sacrifice bunt by Drew Hensley. Trevor MacDonald singled up the middle to score both runners.

But the Foresters (1-4) answered right back in the top of the third. Daneil Lichty hit a RBI double to left and then Langston Ginder hit a two-run home run to right to give Huntington the lead.

Huntington would tack on a pair of runs in the fourth when Lichty singled to score Alex McCutcheon and Ryan Hale scored on leftfielder Jake Scott's bobble in left.

IU Southeast (8-0) tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when MacDonald led of with a triple. He scored on an error by Lichty. Tyler Mills hit a RBI single to short which scored Derek Wagner and Daunte Decello scored on a fielder's choice.

But the Foresters took the lead again in the seventh when Collin Landrum walked and scored on a RBI double by Lichty. He scored on a RBI groundout by Ginder.

The Grenadiers took the lead for good with a four-run rally in the eighth. Jake Scott doubled to left to move John Ullom to third. Ullom scored on a groundout by Hensley and Scott moved to third. A RBI single by MacDonald tied the game.

Ben Berenda pinch-hit for Derek Wagner and he delivered a two-run go-ahead home run to left-center on a 3-1 count for his first home run of the season to give the Grenadiers a 9-7 lead.

Zach Mann struck out two of the first three batters he faced in the ninth and allowed a single. He then struck out Ginder to end the game for his first win of the year. He worked two innings of relief and struck out five.

Trevor MacDonald was 3-for-4 with three RBI in the win.

Game two was a pitcher's duel.

The Grenadiers scored the game's only run in bottom of the first. Clay Woeste singled and stole second, he moved to third on a fielder's choice. Brody Tanksley singled to short to bring Woeste home.

Trevor Reynolds (2-0) took over from there. He allowed three hits in five and a third innings of work, did not walk a batter and struck out seven.

Brenden Bube came on in relief and struck out all five batters he faced for his first save. Brody Tanklsey and Decello had two hits.

IU Southeast travels to Cumberland University Tuesday at 2 p.m.
