NO. 7 IU SOUTHEAST FALLS TO NO. 5 TENNESSEE WESLEYAN TO OPEN 2022 SEASON
ATHENS, Tenn. - No. 5 Tennessee Wesleyan defeated No. 7 IU Southeast 9-5 to open the 2022 season for both team on Saturday.
Brody Tanksley opened the scoring in the top of the first when hit a two-out, solo home run to right to give the Grenadiers the lead.
The Bulldogs (1-0) tied the game in the third after a triple by Dan Sayre. He scored on a RBI single by Livan Reinoso.
The Grenadiers (0-1) answered right back in the top of the fourth. Brody Tanksley reached first on a error and pinch runner Trevor MacDonald advanced to second on a wild pitch. Marco Romero followed with a single to right to bring in MacDonald.
IU Southeast added another run in the sixth inning when Trevor Campbell led off with a double and Tanksley walked. Marco Romero came through with another single to score Campbell but the offense could not tack on more runs in the frame.
The Bulldogs offense came alive in the sixth, striking for four runs on five hits. After a single and a double put runners on second and third, Jacob Berry doubled to left-center to drive in both runs and tie the game.
A RBI groundout by Sayre and a RBI single by Carson Ford put the Bulldogs up 5-3 after six innings.
The Bulldogs put the game out of reach with a three-run seventh inning as the Grenadier defense committed two errors which led to three runs.
IU Southeast got a run back in the eighth when Brody Tanksley drew a walk and MacDonald ran for him, advancing to second on a passed ball. He moved to third on a single by Romero and scored on a sacrifice fly by Derek Wagner.
In the ninth, Ben Berenda started a late rally with a one-out single. Blake Cook hit pinch-hit to right to put runners on second and third. Daunte DeCello followed with a sacrifice fly and a strikeout ended the game.
Marco Romero went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Brody Tanksley was on base three times with a home run and two walks.
The Grenadiers conclude the series with Tennessee Wesleyan on Sunday with a doubleheader scheduled for noon.
