LIMA, Ohio -- The No. 7-ranked Grenadiers split the double-header with University of Northwestern Ohio, defeating the Racers 26-12, before falling 3-2 on a walkoff hit.
The Grenadiers (7-7) started the game with seven-straight hits before recording the first out of the game. They scored 10 runs on 10 hits in the top of the first with doubles from Brody Tanksley, Marco Romero and Trevor Campbell. Tanksley also hit a three-run home run, his team-leading fifth of the year, in his second at-bat of the inning.
UNOH (11-7) would respond in the bottom half with seven runs of their own including 3 homeruns, but would never get closer than the three-run deficit after the first.
IU Southeast scored in each of the first four innings including home runs from Ray Aponte in the second and Derek Wagner in the third.
The Grenadiers would tack on another seven runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a grand slam from Trevor Campbell giving him six RBI for the game. Conner Fries shut the door in the bottom of the inning to give the grenadiers a 26-12 win in the first-ever contest against UNOH. Lane Oesterling (2-1) gets the win in game one.
Game two had a much different tone with only five total runs scored in the contest.
IU Southeast struck first with a solo home run by Marco Romero in the top of the second. The Grenadiers would score again in the fourth thanks to a double off the centerfield wall by Romero and then an errant pickoff attempt by Casey Thomas that allowed Romero to score from second base.
The scoring would stop there for the Grenadiers as the Racers score three unanswered runs over the last three frames to win on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh by Shakur Jackson with a final score of 3-2.
Hunter Kloke (1-3) gets the tough loss allowing six hits, three runs (two earned), three walks and six strikeouts in 6 and a third innings.
The Grenadiers are scheduled to play the Racers again tomorrow in a single nine-inning game starting at 1:00 PM to conclude the series.
