No. 7 IU Southeast Defeats UNOH 11-8 Sunday
LIMA, Ohio – A three-run ninth inning sent IU Southeast past the University of Northwestern Ohio 11-8 and secured the series win for the Grenadiers on Sunday.
Trevor Campbell continued his hot hitting with a leadoff double to open the game and he scored on a RBI single by Clay Woeste. After Woeste and Marco Romero stole second and third, a groundout by Derek Wagner drove in Woeste to give the Grenadiers a 2-0 lead after an inning.
Trevor MacDonald added to the IU Southeast lead with a two-run home run in the second inning and a RBI double by Brody Tanksley extended the lead to 5-0.
A six-run bottom of the second put the Racers on top for the first time in the contest. Shakur Jackson and Christian Perez each had two-run singles in the rally.
In the fourth, Trevor Campbell homered and Tanksley had another RBI double to tie the game at 7-7.
IU Southeast (8-7) went back in front in the sixth when Marco Romero doubled to drive in Brayden Hazelwood.
But the lead was short-lived as the Racers loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning. A fielder's choice to get the second out at second base drove in the tying run but Gavin Knust struck out Tyler Grigalis to end the threat.
The Racers (11-8) moved a runner to third with one in the eighth inning, Conner Fries got a strikeout and a groundout to escape the jam.
In the ninth, Romero drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pickoff attempt. Tyler Mills came in to run for Romero and he scored on a RBI single to center by Derek Wagner.
Ray Aponte homered to right to add on a pair of insurance runs, his third home run of the year.
Conner Fries allowed the first batter to reach in the bottom of the inning but retired the next three batters he faced for his first win of the year. He worked two shutout innings and allowed just two hits while striking out one.
Clay Woeste and Brody Tanksley each had three hits and Tanksley, Wagner and Aponte each drove in two on the day.
