No. 19 IU Southeast Sweeps Senior Day Doubleheader Against WVU Tech

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The No. 19 ranked IU Southeast baseball team won both games of the doubleheader against WVU Tech on Saturday, completing the series sweep on Senior Day.

In game one, IU Southeast jumped on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Trevor Campbell singled and proceeded to steal second and third. Fellow senior Brody Tanksley drove Campbell in with an RBI double to put the Grenadiers on top 1-0.

The Grenadiers played add on in the bottom of the second inning. Seniors Brandon Boxer and John Ullom were both hit by a pitch, and both stole a base to give the Grenadiers runners on second and third with one out. Daunte DeCello, another senior, drove the two runners home with an RBI single to make it a 3-0 game.

The third inning saw the Grenadiers add another run. Senior Derek Wagner reached on an error and then stole second. Brandon Boxer delivered an RBI double to make it 4-0 IU Southeast. WVU Tech scored in the top of the fifth on a wild pitch to make it a 4-1 game.

The Grenadiers loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, and senior Marco Romero delivered a three-run double to make it 7-1 Grenadiers. Ben Berenda made it an 8-1 game with an RBI single, and Brandon Boxer drove in another run with an RBI double to make it 9-1. Senior Tyler Mills made it 10-1 with an RBI single of his own.

Brody Tanksley ended the game in the seventh with an RBI single to give the Grenadiers an 11-1 victory in seven innings. Senior pitcher Hunter Kloke threw five innings of one-run baseball, allowing one hit while striking out 10.

In game two, it was WVU Tech's turn to score first as an RBI single made it a 1-0 game. Not to be outdone, the Grenadiers answered in the bottom of the first. Brody Tanksley delivered an RBI single to make it 1-1. Marco Romero added an RBI single of his own to make it 2-1 IU Southeast, and Brandon Boxer added to his monster day with a two-RBI single to make it 4-1 Grenadiers.

WVU Tech added two runs in the third to make it a 4-3 game, but the Grenadiers once again responded. John Ullom was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Daunte DeCello drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 6-3 IU Southeast.

The Grenadiers extended their lead in the sixth. Trevor Campbell made it a 7-3 game with an RBI double. Campbell then made it an 8-3 game when he stole third and scored on a throwing error by WVU Tech. The Grenadiers then took a 9-3 lead, scoring on another WVU Tech error.

The Golden Bears scored three runs in the seventh to make it interesting, but the Grenadiers held on for a 9-6 victory in seven innings to complete a three-game sweep of WVU Tech. IU Southeast moves to 28-11 overall and 15-3 in RSC play.

The Grenadiers stay home to play Lindsey Wilson on Tuesday.
