No. 18 Grenadiers Defeat Cumberland 18-8

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The No. 18-ranked IU Southeast baseball team defeated the Cumberland Phoenix 18-8 in seven innings on Wednesday as the Grenadiers recorded 20 hits in the contest.

The Grenadiers (29-12) scored four runs in each of the first two innings. In the bottom of the first, Derek Wagner came through with the bases loaded and delivered a double that cleared the bases. Brandon Boxer drove him in with a RBI single.

In the second inning, Trevor Campbell tripled to left to score Clay Woeste who had doubled. Brody Tanksley drove in Campbell with a single. Later in the inning, Marco Romero scored on a wild pitch and a RBI single by Boxer scored Wagner.

In the fourth, Derek Wagner singled down the left-field line to drive in Romero and Tyler Mills. Then John Ullom connected on a two-run home run to extend the lead to 12-1 in the fourth inning.

The Phoenix cut into the deficit with a six-run sixth inning. Santrel Farmer hit a three-run home run start the rally. Back-to-back singles scored three more runs and cut the lead to 12-8.

The Grenadiers put the game away with a five-run seventh inning. Brayden Hazelwood singled to short to drive in Woeste, Blake Cook drove in two runs with a single to left and Tyler Mills capped off the rally when he reached on an error and Cook and Hazelwood scored.

Trevor Campbell went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and a RBI. Derek Wager finished the day 2-for-2 with two runs scored, five RBI and a walk. Brandon Boxer had three hits and drove in two. Blake Cook and John Ullom each knocked in two in the win.

IU Southeast travels to IU Kokomo Friday at 6 p.m.
