
No. 9 Webber International Gets Past No. 18 IU Southeast In 6-5 Thriller
CARTERSVILLE, Ga. – No. 9 Webber International rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the fifth to defeat No. 18 IU Southeast in the first game of the Southeast Rumble on Friday.
The Warriors (11-0) scored first when Kris Allen hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning.
IU Southeast had runners at first and third in the fourth after Brayden Hazelwood singled, stole second and moved to third on a groundout. After Blake Cook walked, Ben Berenda struck out to end the inning.
The IU Southeast offense came to life in the fifth when Trevor Goodwin walked and Ryan Kassel singled,
Slater Schield followed with a RBI single to center which brought in Goodwin to tie the game.
After Hazelwood reached on a base hit, Trevor Campbell singled to center to score Schield and Kassel.
Mason White reached on a fielder's choice and Hazelwood advanced to third. The runners advanced on a double steal and Hazelwood scored to extend the lead to 4-1.
But the Warriors answered with a four-run bottom of the fifth. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases and Luis Acevedo followed with a two-run double to cut the lead to one.
Bryan Morales hit a two-run single to send the Warriors back in front. Starter Luke Schafer retired to the next two batters he faced to keep IU Southeast close.
After Webber International added another run in the sixth, the Grenadiers did not threaten again until the ninth.
Ben Berenda led off the inning with a home run and Kody Putnam put the tying run on base when he followed with a double.
A groundout moved him to third but two strikeouts ended the game.
Brayden Hazelwood had two hits, Trevor Campbell drove in two in the loss. Oscar Welsh worked a scoreless inning and third in relief for the Grenadiers.
IU Southeast takes on Taylor University Saturday at 10 a.m.
