Grenadiers Split Doubleheader with Rio Grande on Sunday

LOUISVILLE - The IU Southeast baseball team split a doubleheader with Rio Grande on Sunday, losing two of three to the RedStorm over the weekend.

 Game one on Sunday saw Rio Grande strike first. An RBI single gave the RedStorm a 1-0 lead, and a two-out single gave Rio Grande a 3-0 advantage in the first inning.

 IU Southeast put a run on the board in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Garrett Jones. Rio Grande used a solo home run to take a 4-1 lead.

 Trevor Goodwin lined a single to left field to cut IU Southeast's deficit to 4-3. A dropped flyball by Rio Grande allowed the Grenadiers to tie the game at 4-4.

 Rio Grande jumped back in front 5-4 on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth. A sacrifice fly by IU Southeast's Slater Schield tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth.

IU Southeast took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Kody Putnam. An RBI groundout by Ben Berenda made it 7-5 Grenadiers. Trevor Goodwin followed with another RBI single to increase the IU Southeast lead to 8-5. Trevor Goodwin came around to score on a wild pitch to extend the Grenadier lead to 9-5.

IU Southeast took an 11-5 lead in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Kody Putnam. The Grenadiers would go on to win game one 11-5. Garrett Hill picked up the win, throwing three scoreless innings. Kody Putnam and Trevor Goodwin each had three RBIs in the victory.

 Game 2 was dominated by Rio Grande. Daniel Rutherford hit a two-run home run in the top of the first and a three-run home run in the top of the third. Rutherford also pitched six scoreless innings to secure a 6-1 Rio Grande win. Slater Schield drove in the lone IU Southeast run.

 IU Southeast (4-11, 1-2 RSC) is scheduled to take on IU Kokomo at home in their next series.
