Grenadiers Sweep IUPUC Doubleheader on Tuesday

NORTH VERNON, Ind. - The IU Southeast baseball team swept IUPUC in two seven-inning games on Tuesday. The Grenadiers won game one 20-2 and game two 14-6.

In the top of the second inning in game one, IU Southeast scored eight runs. Jackson Roseburrough scored when Slater Shield was hit by a pitch. Garrett Jones drove in two runs on a single to right field. Slater Shield scored on a wild pitch. Garrett Jones scored when Alex Yurt drew a throw to second base on a stolen base attempt. Kody Putnam capped the eight-run inning with a three-run home run to left field.

In the top of the third, Trevor Campbell hit a two-run home run to left center to increase the Grenadier lead to 10-0. IUPUC scored two runs in the bottom of the third to make it 10-2.

The Grenadiers scored eight runs in the top of the sixth as well. Ben Berenda kicked off the scoring with a two-run home run to right field. Alex Yurt drove in two runs with a single to center field and came around to score on a Trevor Campbell single. Mason White homered to left center, and Kody Putnam followed with his second home run of the game.

Brayden Hazelwood hit a two-run home run to left center in the top of the seventh to give IU Southeast a 20-2 lead, the score which the Grenadiers went on to win by. Eight Grenadiers registered a base hit and an RBI in the contest.

Cade Reynolds got the win in game one, throwing three innings. Brock Hammond, Zach Gutermuth, Luke McLaughlin, and Tyler Wilson each threw a scoreless inning.

IU Southeast scored first in game two, taking a 1-0 lead on a Mason White sacrifice fly in the top of the first. In the top of the second, Brayden Hazelwood scored on a fielder's choice to give the Grenadiers a 2-0 edge. Mason White drove in his second run of the game in the top of the third to extend the lead to 3-0.

IUPUC scored three runs in the bottom of the third on an RBI single and a two-run home run to tie the score at 3-3. IU Southeast responded in the top of the fourth. Alex Yurt drove in Austin Griffin to give the Grenadiers a 4-3 lead. Trevor Campbell followed with a two-run double to extend the advantage to 6-3.

IUPUC scored a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth to narrow the deficit to 6-4. IU Southeast answered with three runs in the top of the sixth. Ryan Kassel scored on a Mason White single, and Alex Yurt scored on an error by the right fielder. Ben Berenda drove in a run on a fielder's choice to give IU Southeast a 9-4 lead.

The Crimson Pride scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 9-6, but the Grenadiers responded with five runs in the top of the seventh. Trevor Campbell drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Ryan Kassel scored on a wild pitch, and Mason White drove in his fourth run of the day with an RBI single. Kody Putnam and Ben Berenda each had RBI singles in the inning.

The Grenadiers won game two 14-6. Nine different Grenadiers had a hit, and six different Grenadiers drove in a run. Mason White drove in four runs and Trevor Campbell drove in three.

Brendan Koester started for the Grenadiers, throwing three innings. Cade Rusch picked up the win with a scoreless inning in the fourth. Oscar Welsh, Conner Fries and Garrett Hill each threw an inning for IU Southeast.

IU Southeast now sits at 10-13 overall on the year. The Grenadiers are scheduled to play Alice Lloyd this weekend.
