Grenadiers Ground Eagles 5-3 Saturday
LOUISVILLE – The IU Southeast baseball team defeated Alice Lloyd 5-3 to open a three-game weekend series on Saturday.
IU Southeast scored in each of the first three innings to take a 5-1 lead.
In the first, Alex Yurt singled and stole second before being driven in by Trevor Campbell's double down the right-field line.
But the Grenadiers could not tack on any runs in that inning. In the bottom of the second, a walk to Blake Cook and single by Trevor Goodwin put runners at first and second. Then Slater Schield came through with a two-ut double to left-center to drive in Cook.
After the Eagles cut the lead in half in the third, Mason White hit a two-run home off the top of the wall in right field and over to extend the lead to 4-1. It was White's third home run of the year.
The Grenadiers put together another two-out rally in the seventh when Campbell singled and then stole second. Kody Putnam singled to left to score Campbell.
Starter Luke Schafer allowed one run on two hits in six innings. He walked a batter and struck out six.
He worked his way into trouble with a run home and runners at first and second with one out in the third. But back-to-back groundouts ended the threat and he cruised the rest of the way.
Trevor Campbell went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI in the win and Slater Schield had two hits and a RBI.
IU Southeast concludes the series with Alice Lloyd Sunday at noon with a doubleheader.
