Grenadiers Sweep Oakland City to Extend Winning Streak to 11 Games
LOUISVILLE - The IU Southeast baseball team swept Oakland City in a doubleheader on Sunday to extend their winning streak to 11 games. The Grenadiers won game one 4-2 and game two 11-3.
Oakland City scored first in game one. With runners on first and second in the top of the first inning, a throwing error allowed both runners to score to give the Mighty Oaks a 2-0 lead.
Trevor Goodwin led off the bottom of the third for IU Southeast with a double down the right field line. Brayden Hazelwood followed with a home run to left field to tie the game at 2-2.
Two singles and a fielder's choice gave IU Southeast runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the fifth. A groundout advanced the runners to second and third, and Trevor Campbell followed with a two-run double down the left field line to give IU Southeast a 4-2 edge.
IU Southeast went on to win game one 4-2. Luke Schafer got the win for IU Southeast, throwing six innings of two-run (zero earned) ball with nine strikeouts. Zach Gutermuth and Luke McLaughlin pitched the seventh, and Garrett Hill threw the final two innings to pick up his third save of the year. Trevor Campbell and Brayden Hazelwood both drove in two runs.
IU Southeast opened game two with three straight doubles to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Ben Berenda followed with an RBI single to give IU Southeast a 3-0 advantage.
Oakland City responded with a two-run home run in the top of the second to narrow the gap to 3-2. Alex Yurt hit a two-run home run of his own in the bottom half of the second to extend the Grenadier lead to 5-2.
Ben Berenda doubled in the bottom of the third to score Kody Putnam and give IU Southeast a 6-2 advantage. Slater Schield singled to score Garrett Jones, making it 7-2. Trevor Campbell drove in two more runs to make it 9-2, and Alex Yurt scored on a double steal to put the Grenadiers ahead 10-2.
Mason White hit a home run to left center to give IU Southeast an 11-2 lead. Oakland City scored a run in the top of the seventh, but the Grenadiers went on to win 11-3.
Lane Oesterling picked up the victory for IU Southeast, giving up two runs in four innings while striking out five. Brendan Koester threw a scoreless fifth inning, and Oscar Welsh followed with a scoreless sixth. Conner Fries closed the game in the seventh.
Five Grenadiers had at least two hits in the contest. Trevor Campbell led the way, finishing 3-4 with three RBIs. The first three Grenadiers in the lineup (Alex Yurt, Trevor Campbell, and Mason White) combined to go 7-11 with seven RBIs.
IU Southeast moved to 17-13 overall and 10-5 in RSC play. The Grenadiers are scheduled to play a doubleheader at home against IUPUC on Wednesday.
