Grenadiers Sweep Midway on Saturday

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast baseball team swept a doubleheader from Midway 6-4 and 15-5 on Saturday.

In game one, IU Southeast used a stellar outing from starter Luke Schafer to take the series opener. Schafer hurled eight shutout innings and allowed three hits and a walk while striking out seven for his fifth win of the season.

The Grenadiers opened the scoring in the fourth when Trevor Goodwin hit a two-run double to left-center that drove in Brayden Hazelwood and Kody Putnam.

Ryan Kassel drove in Goodwin with a single to right.

After a pair of walks in the seventh, Trevor Campbell doubled to right to drive in Alex Yurt and Slater Schield.

Campbell would later score on a wild pitch.

A late rally capped off by a two-run home run by Shane Taylor cut the lead to 6-4 in the ninth but Luke McLaughlin struck out Ayden Sciandra to end the game.

Alex Yurt, Trevor Campbell and Trevor Goodwin each had two hits in the win and Goodwin drove in a pair.

In game two, IU Southeast fell behind 1-0 but scored the next 15 runs to pull away.

Trevor Campbell singled, stole second and third and scored on an error to tie the game. Then Ben Berenda drove in Mason White with a double.

Trevor Goodwin hit a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 3-1 in the first.

In the third, Kody Putnam tripled to drive in Campbell and White and Putnam would score on a wild pitch to double the lead.

A pair of singles by Kassel and Campbell allowed Hazelwood and Yurt to score and then Campbell scored on a wild pitch.

Mason White hit a solo home run to center for his 10th home run of the season in the fifth to extend the lead to 10-1.

He drove in two more runs in the fifth with a double and would later score on a Putnam double.

In the sixth, White drove in his fifth RBI of the game with a bases-loaded walk.

That was more than enough for the Grenadier pitching staff. Trevor Yotkewich worked 4 1/3 innings and allowed one run on four hits while striking out two and walking one.

Luke McLaughlin and Oscar Welsh each worked scoreless innings in relief.

Mason White finished 3-for-4 with four runs scored and five RBI and Trevor Campbell was 4-for-4 with four runs scored.

Kody Putnam had two hits and drove in three.

IU Southeast concludes the series Sunday at 1 p.m. The Senior Day ceremony will begin at 12:45 p.m.
