Grenadiers Fall To No. 23 Cumberland In Extra Innings

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast baseball team fell 14-10 in 10 innings to No. 23 Cumberland (Tenn.) on Monday.

IU Southeast fell behind 3-1 after an inning of play. The Phoenix were aided by a three-run home run by Cole Turney, his 27th of the year.

IU Southeast tied the game with a three-run third inning. After Slater Schield was hit and Alex Yurt singled, Trevor Campbell doubled down the right-field line to cut the lead to one. After stealing third, Campbell would come around to score on a wild pitch and tie the game

Alex Yurt put the Grenadiers in front with a solo home run to right in the fifth, his third of the year. A RBI groundout by Mason White doubled the Grenadier lead as Campbell scored after reaching on a triple.

Four-straight two-out singles drove in five runs for the Phoenix in the seventh, but IU Southeast slowly chipped away to tie the game.

Trevor Campbell drove in another run with a double to score Schield.

In the eighth, Blake Cook doubled to right to drive in Jackson Roseburrough from second. Then an opposite field single by Garrett Jones moved Cook to third. He would score on a wild pitch to tie the game.

IU Southeast had a chance to plate the go-ahead run as Garrett Jones attempted to score from second on an infield single by Campbell. Jones was tagged out at the plate after a heads-up throw home by second baseman Jose Moreno to end the inning.

The Phoenix scored five runs in the 10th inning to put the game away. Two bases-loaded walks and a hit batter drove in three of the five runs.

Mason White tried to start a rally with a RBI double in the bottom of the frame but the Grenadiers fell short.

Trevor Campbell was 4-for-6 with two runs and three RBI in the loss. Alex Yurt, Mason White and Ben Berenda each had two hits and White drove in two. Brandon Koester worked 4 and 2/3 scoreless innings of relief but ended with a no-decision.

The Grenadiers head to Brescia this weekend to conclude the regular season.
