Grenadiers Hand Rio Grande First RSC Loss With 75-65 Victory
The teams traded baskets for the first ten minutes of the game. IU Southeast took a 16-14 lead on a Jocobi Hendricks layup, but Rio Grande hit back-to-back threes to take a 20-16 advantage.
Another three by Rio Grande made it 23-18 with six minutes remaining in the first half. IU Southeast responded with 17 straight points to jump out in front 35-23. Glenn Hill had seven of the 17 points during the run.
IU Southeast allowed just two points in the final six minutes of the half, and the Grenadiers took a 37-25 lead into halftime.
The first four minutes of the second half were all IU Southeast as they extended their lead to 18 at 43-25. A three-point play by Jaivaughn Jackson gave the Grenadiers a 21-point lead at 50-29.
Rio Grande was able to cut the lead to 16 at 61-45, but IU Southeast quickly extended the lead back to 18. Back-to-back threes by the Red Storm cut the lead to 14 at 67-53 with 3:44 remaining.
A Glenn Hill layup with 2:06 remaining gave the Grenadiers an 18-point lead once again at 71-53. A three by Rio Grande made it 71-56, but a Christian Stewart layup made it 73-56 IU Southeast with 1:30 remaining.
Rio Grande was able to cut it to 10, but the Grenadiers fought off the Red Storm and handed them their first conference loss of the year at 75-65.
Glenn Hill led IU Southeast with 23 points. Jocobi Hendricks registered a double-double with 18 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Anthony Wales Jr. scored 14 points and Jaivaughn Jackson added 10 points off the bench.
IU Southeast won the turnover battle, scoring 22 points off 18 Rio Grande turnovers. IU Southeast only turned the ball over six times, limiting the Red Storm's transition offense.
The Grenadiers move to 10-8 overall and 5-4 in conference. Rio Grande falls to 14-5 overall and 8-1 in the RSC.
IU Southeast gets a week off before hosting Midway next Saturday.
