IU Southeast Defeats Alice Lloyd 90-77 In RSC Quarterfinal
NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast men's basketball team opened postseason play on Wednesday with a 90-77 win over No. 3 seeded Alice Lloyd in the quarterfinals of the River States Conference Men's Basketball Championship.
A swarming Grenadier defense forced 19 steals and 21 turnovers which led to 29 points.
With IU Southeast (21-8) leading 12-10, the Grenadiers began to limit the Eagles to one shot on each possession and forced turnovers. On the offensive end, they used a 12-3 run to extend their lead to double-figures.
Caleb Brown and Jaivaughn Jackson each hit three-pointers during the run.
Two Alice Lloyd free throws cut the lead to nine but IU Southeast closed the half on a 14- 6 run to take a 36-21 lead at halftime.
Jocobi Hendricks had nine first-half points to lead IU Southeast.
In the second half, the Eagles cut the deficit to 12 points quickly and Wiley Brown called a timeout just over a minute into the period.
The second-seeded IU Southeast pulled away with a 13-0 run aided by Glenn Hill and Anthony Wales Jr. three-point field goals and steals by Jocobi Hendricks that led to layups.
After two J.J. Reed free-throws extended the lead to 59-31, the Eagles' Jacob Curry entered the game with 13 minutes to go and proceeded to connect on 7-of-9 three-point attempts to try and get Alice Lloyd back into the contest.
The deficit was too much to overcome as the Grenadier offense kept the Eagles at bay for much of the second half.
But a Curry three cut the lead to 86-72 with 1:27 to play but a missed three and Jaivaughn Jackson layup put the game out of reach.
J.J. Reed had 12 points in the second half and Glenn Hill added 11 in the win.
Jocobi Hendricks had 17 points and eight steals in the game to lead the Grenadiers, Glenn Hill had 15 points, J.J. Reed had 14 points and Christian Stewart had 10 points in the win.
IU Southeast shot 51 percent from the field and 40 percent from three-point range.
The Grenadiers will travel to No. 1 overall seed Rio Grande Saturday at 4 p.m. in the RSC Semifinals.
