MCKENZIE, Tenn. – The IU Southeast softball team opened the 2022 season by dropping 12-4 and 6-5 decisions to Bethel University on Friday.
In game one, IU Southeast fell behind 4-0 before getting on the board in the fourth inning. The Wildcats scored a pair of runs in the first inning on an error and a RBI double and added another two runs in the third on a two-run single by Madison White.
An RBI single by Erin Templeman scored Brooklyn Gibbs who had reached on a walk and moved to second when Macie Zink was hit.
After the Wildcats tacked on four runs in the fourth inning, three on a home run from Kayla Gillespie, IU Southeast battled back with three runs in the fifth.
Brooklyn Gibbs doubled to score Katie Templeman from first and Zink followed with a RBI single to score Gibbs. Back-to-back singles by Ellie Jackman and Erin Templeman scored Zink.
A four-run bottom of the inning for the Wildcats ended the contest. They scored four runs on four hits.
Erin Templeman had two hits and two RBI in the loss.
In game two, IU Southeast opened the scoring when Erin Templeman hit a two-run double to bring in Jackman and Zink.
The Wildcats tied the game in the third when Gilliespie had a RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Alexis Wheeler knocked in a pair of runs.
Bethel took the lead in the fourth when Leah Beasley got down a sacrifice bunt to bring in Morgan Hunt.
But the Grenadiers took the lead with three runs in the top of the fifth. Katie Templeman was hit, Gibbs reached on an error and Zink was hit to load the bases. Ellie Jackman came through with a two-run double and a RBI groundout by Dallas Henderson extended the IU Southeast lead to 5-3.
The lead was short-lived as the Wildcats clawed out three runs in the bottom of the sixth. After two batters were hit, Maria Murtaugh had a RBI double and Gilliespie had a two-run double to put Bethel ahead.
IU Southeast got the tying run on to lead off the seventh when Gibbs singled but the next three batters were retired in order to end the game.
Ellie Jackman had two hits and drove in two while Erin Templeman knocked in two more in the loss.
IU Southeast hosts Calumet College of St. Joseph Friday at 12:30 p.m.
