Grenadiers Sweep Carlow Friday

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team defeated Oakland City 6-4 and 6-5 on Friday to extend its winning streak to eight games.

The Celtics struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Amanda Hu singled to right to drive in Megan Pollinger and Alayna Mintz from second and third.

IU Southeast got a run back in the bottom of the frame when Ellie Jackman singled to right to drive in Katie Templeman.

The Grenadiers took the lead in the bottom of the third with a four-run rally. Lindsey Nelson to put runners at the corners and then stole second. Erin Templeman doubled to left-center to score Katie Cook and Nelson.

After Katie Templeman singled and stole second, Hannah Nunemaker singled to center to score both Templemans and extend the lead to 5-2.

The Grenadiers tacked on another run in the fourth when Macie Zink led off with a triple and scored on a groundout by Cook.

The Celtics got a pair of runs in the fifth when Maddie Bowes doubled to drive in Jillian Durst and Adrianna Gotheld.

Brooklyn Gibbs worked the first four innings and allowed two runs on four hits while walking one and striking out three for her seventh win.

Gabby Mahoney came on in relief and worked the final three innings and allowed two runs on six hits for her first save.

Hannah Nunemaker had two hits and drove in two and Ellie Jackman, Macie Zink and Erin Templeman all had two hits in the win.

In game two, Hannah Gallagher scored on a wild pitch to give Carlow a 1-0 lead.

The Grenadiers answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Ellie Jackman sparked the rally with a leadoff triple and scored on Cook's double. Lindsey Nelson followed with a RBI single to drive in Cook and Brooklyn Gibbs, who had walked and stolen second.

Carlow scored a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. The lead was short-lived as IU Southeast took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Brooklyn Gibbs reached base on an error and moved to second on Zink's single. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch.

After Gibbs was forced out at home on a fielder's choice, Zink scored on a groundout.

With runners at second and third, Erin Templeman singled through the right side to drive in Nelson and Cook.

In the top of the seventh, Carlow had runners at first and third with no outs. Hannah Gallagher was caught stealing and Gotheld scored from third on the play. Then Meghan Waggoner recorded a strikeout and a line out to end the game.

Hannah Nunemaker worked five innings and allowed four runs, two earned, on eight hits, she walked two.

Meghan Waggoner earned the save with two innings of relief and allowed one run on three hits while striking out a batter.

Ellie Jackman and Erin Templeman each had two hits in the win and Lindsey Nelson and Erin Templeman each drove in two.

IU Southeast hosts Point Park Saturday at 1 p.m.
