IU Southeast Splits Doubleheader Against Point Park Saturday
NEW ALBANY, In. – The IU Southeast softball team split a weekend doubleheader with Point Park, winning game one 7-4 and losing game two 6-4.
In the top of the first inning of game one, Point Park loaded the bases with one out. A two-run double made it 2-0 Pioneers. Point Park loaded the bases once again, and with two outs in the inning, two straight singles brought in two more runs to make it 4-0 Pioneers.
IU Southeast loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first, and Katie Cook delivered a two-run single to make it a 4-2 game. Lindsey Nelson drove in a run with a single to left field, and a second runner scored on the play after an errant throw to the plate. Erin Templeman made it a 5-4 Grenadier lead with an RBI double to right field.
The Grenadiers added another run in the bottom of the second. IU Southeast loaded the bases once again, this time with one out in the inning. Erin Templeman added another RBI with a sacrifice fly, making it 6-4 IU Southeast.
The scoring stalled until the bottom of the fifth inning. Emilee Edwards singled with one out. Ellie Jackman followed with another single, and a misplay by Point Park allowed Edwards to score from first to give the Grenadiers a 7-4 advantage.
The Grenadiers would go on to win 7-4, extending their winning streak to nine games. Brooklyn Gibbs pitched all seven innings, picking up a win. Katie Cook and Erin Templeman each drove in two runs in the victory.
In game two, the Grenadiers were the ones to score first. A single and a sacrifice bunt put Ellie Jackman on second with one out. After a walk and a flyout, Lindsey Nelson came through with a two-run single to make it 2-0 IU Southeast after one.
The Grenadiers played add-on in the third inning. Brooklyn Gibbs walked, and Katie Cook doubled to make it 3-0 IU Southeast. Point Park scored their first run in the top of the fourth on a throwing error by IU Southeast on a potential inning-ending double play.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Brooklyn Gibbs tripled and scored on a Katie Cook single to give the Grenadiers a 4-1 lead. Going into the seventh inning, IU Southeast maintained the 4-1 advantage.
Point Park drew a leadoff walk, but the Grenadiers managed to retire two straight batters. Down to their final out, Point Park rallied. A single put runners on first and second, and a double scored a run to make it 4-2. Another single scored two runs, tying the game at 4. After yet another base hit, two more runners scored on an RBI double, putting the Pioneers up 6-4.
The Grenadiers managed to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Point Park corralled a deep line drive to right field to hang on and win 6-4, ending the Grenadier win streak at nine games. IU Southeast is scheduled to host Brescia for a doubleheader on Tuesday.
