Grenadiers Sweep Calumet 11-1 and 4-3 on Saturday
JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team used an offensive explosion to defeat Calumet College of St. Joseph in game one of a doubleheader and solid pitching and defense in game two for the sweep.
In game one, the Grenadiers fell behind 1-0 when Ryan Regier scored on a throwing error.
But the Grenadiers did not trail for very long. In the bottom of the inning Savannah Gaither singled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch.
Macie Zink came through with a two-run double to put the Grenadiers in front. She would later score on an error.
Starter Hannah Nunemaker helped herself with a RBI double to right to drive in Issy Wright, who had walked and stolen second.
The Grenadiers batted around and Gaither doubled in her second at-bat to drive in Cassi Roman and Nunemaker.
Autumn Oehlstrom hit a RBI double to right to score Gaither and Erin Templeman capped off the rally with a RBI single to bring in Oehlstrom.
The Grenadier scored 10 runs on six hits and left only one runner in the inning.
After Kendall Brown singled and stole second, Nunemaker drove her in with a RBI single in the bottom of the second.
Hannah Nunemaker cruised to her first win of the season by retiring the final five batters she faced in order, two via strikeout.
She allowed one unearned run on two hits, walked two and struck out three. Morgan Jenks worked a perfect fifth inning in relief, striking out a batter.
Savannah Gaither, Autumn Oehlstrom and Hannah Nunemaker each had two hits and Gaither and Nunemaker and Zink each drove in a pair.
Kendall Brown stole two bases in the win.
In game two, the Crimson Wave struck first once again when Adelina Staden singled to drive in Roxanne Ines. Then Staden was caught stealing but Regnier scored on the throw.
The Grenadiers took the lead with a three-run third inning with a two out rally.
Cassi Roman reached base on an error and Oehlstrom followed with a two-run home run to right, her first of the season.
Erin Templeman followed with a solo home home run to left, her first of the year.
IU Southeast (3-1) added on the in the fourth when Brown led off with a double, moved to third on a Issy Wright single and scored on a single by Gaither.
CCSJ tried to rally in the top of the seventh when Sydney Murph led off with a double and scored on a two-out, RBI single to left by Marissa McElligott.
With the go-ahead run at the plate, starter McKenzie Rice go Regnier to ground out to third to end the game.
She got the complete-game win, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out four.
Savannah Gaither and Erin Templeman each had two hit and Oehlstrom drove in two.
IU Southeast faces Saint Francis (Illinois) Sunday at 1 p.m. at Jeffersonville High School.
