Grenadiers Fall To Taylor Saturday

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team fell 7-0 and 10-6 in eight innings to Taylor University on Saturday.

Game one was a pitcher's duel as Grenadier starter Madison Wathen allowed just one hit in the front five innings and Taylor starter Mackenzie Noah only allowed three hits in the first five innings.

The only Grenadier scoring threat came in the second when Cassi Roman doubled to left but was tagged out at third after tagging up on a flyout by Macie Zink to right field.

The Trojans scored all seven of their runs in the sixth inning. Back-to-back RBI doubles started the rally, and a two-run single by Livie Lehmann broke the game open. Two more RBI doubles and a RBI single made it 7-0.

IU Southeast had runners on first and second in the bottom of the inning but a groundout ended the frame.

IU Southeast would not get a runner in scoring position again.

Taylor Hoggatt had two hits in the loss. Madison Wathen worked five and a third inning in her Grenadier debut, allowing three runs on three hits, she walked two and struck out a pair.

In game two, Taylor got on the board in the top of the first inning when Aleyah Rastetter hit a two-run home run to left but IU Southeast answered back in the bottom of the inning when Autumn Oehlstrom singled to right to drive in Savannah Gaither.

Kendall Brown followed with a two-run home run just inside the foul pole in left to give the Grenadiers the lead. It was her second home run of the season.

Taylor took the lead with a run in the third and a pair in the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth Cassi Roman doubled to center to score Oehlstrom. Macie Zink hit a sacrifice fly to right to tie the game.

After a walk to Wathen put runners at the corners with two out, Issy Wright hit a grounder to short and Alaina Winzeler was forced out at second.

After Brooklyn Gibbs walked in the seventh, Taylor Hoggatt narrowly missed an extra-base hit but she flew out up against the wall in center field. But the next two Grenadiers were retired to force exra innings.

The Trojans scored five runs in the top of the eigthth, capped off by a three-run home run by Lehmann.

A Cassi Roman double to left drove in Erin Templeman in the bottom of the inning but the rally was short lived.

Autumn Oehlstrom and Cassi Roman each had two hits and Roman and Brown each drove in two.

IU Southeast hosts IU South Bend Sunday at noon at Jeffersonville High School.
