Grenadiers Sweep Midway Doubleheader to Extend Winning Streak to 10 Games
NEW ALBANY, Ind. - The IU Southeast softball team extended their winning streak to 10 games after sweeping Midway in a doubleheader on Tuesday.
In game one, Midway scored first on an RBI groundout in the top of the second. In the bottom of the third, Kendall Brown lined a two-run double to center field to give IU Southeast a 2-1 lead. Taylor Hoggatt lined a single that deflected off the pitcher to score Kendall Brown, giving the Grenadiers a 3-1 advantage.
Midway tied the game in the top of the fourth on a two-run single. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Kendall Brown gave IU Southeast a 4-3 lead on an RBI groundout. As Cassi Roman attempted to steal second, Erin Templeman scored from third on the throw to second base.
Erin Templeman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth to give IU Southeast a 6-3 lead. Kendall Brown singled to center to extend the lead to 8-3, and Erin Templeman scored from third once again on an attempted steal of second base to give the Grenadiers a 9-3 lead.
McKenzie Rice came in and pitched the seventh inning for IU Southeast to secure a 9-3 win. Madison Wathen got the win for IU Southeast, throwing six innings while striking out seven.
Kendall Brown led IU Southeast with five RBI in game one, finishing 2-for-5 with a double while also recording a stolen base. Erin Templeman and Taylor Hoggatt each had an RBI as well. Macie Zink added a double, and Issy Wright added a stolen base.
In game two, it was IU Southeast who scored first. After Brooklyn Gibbs led off the bottom of the first with a walk and a stolen base, Autumn Oehlstrom singled to right field to give the Grenadiers a 1-0 lead.
Brooklyn Gibbs extended the Grenadier lead to 3-0 on a single down the left field line, scoring Issy Wright and Katie Templeman. Midway cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the third.
Kendall Brown singled through the right side in the bottom of the fourth to extend the IU Southeast advantage to 4-2, but Midway struck for four runs in the top of the fifth to jump out in front 6-4.
Autumn Oehlstrom singled to left field to cut the IU Southeast deficit to 6-5 in the bottom of the fifth. Erin Templeman followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 6-6.
In the bottom of the sixth, Katie Templeman singled to center field to score Cassi Roman and give IU Southeast a 7-6 lead. Issy Wright delivered an RBI groundout to extend the lead to 8-6.
Midway had runners on first and second with one out in the seventh, but Rice retired the final two Eagles to secure an 8-6 victory for IU Southeast.
Hannah Nunemaker started for the Grenadiers, throwing 4.1 innings. McKenzie Rice picked up the win, throwing the final 2.2 innings.
Autumn Oehlstrom had four hits and two RBIs in game two. Brooklyn Gibbs went 2-2 with three walks, scoring three runs and driving in two. Erin Templeman, Kendall Brown, Katie Templeman, and Issy Wright each drove in a run. Brooklyn Gibbs, Katie Templeman, and Issy Wright each stole a base in game two.
