IU Southeast Splits Doubleheader With Oakland City

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team saw its winning streak snapped at 11-straight wins after the Grenadiers split a doubleheader with Oakland City on Sunday, winning 7-0 and falling 9-5.

In game one, Oakland City threatened to score first when Hannah Wissel tripled to right-center to led off the third, but starter Madison Wathen recorded two groundouts and a strikeout to end the inning.

In the bottom of the inning Brynlea Bennett led off with a single to right and moved to second on a sacrifice by Issy Wright. A triple to center by Brooklyn Gibbs followed to open the scoring.

Autumn Oehlstrom drove in Gibbs with a RBi double. A single to shallow right by Kendall Brown drove in Abby Chandler and then Brown scored on a RBI double by Cassi Roman.

A RBI single by Taylor Hoggatt capped off the rally and scored Roman to make it 5-0.

IU Southeast added on a run in the fourth when Bennett singled and moved to third on an error. Erin Templeman hit a sacrifice fly to knock her in.

Madison Wathen allowed a leadoff walk in the fifth but retired the next three batters she faced in her final inning of work.

Brooklyn Gibbs hit her first home run of the season to left to extend the lead to 7-0 in the sixth.

Madison Wathen allowed one hit in five shutout innings. She walked two and struck out six. Issy Wright worked the final two innings and allowed just two hits.

Brooklyn Gibbs, Taylor Hoggatt and Brynlea Bennett each had two hits and Gibbs drove in a pair in the win.

In game two, the game was tied at 1-1 when the Mighty Oaks struck for five runs in the third inning.

Oakland City recorded just one extra-base hit in the inning, an RBI double by Gabbi Gilpin, but had a sacrifice fly and two RBI singles and also scored on a wild pitch.

Oakland City scored three more runs in the top of the fourth to take a 9-2 lead but IU Southeast got back in the game with a three-run fourth.

Autumn Oehlstrom drove in two with a single and Issy Wright scored on a single by Kendall Brown.

The Grenadiers had their chances to cut into the deficit and had 15 hits in the contest, but left 11 runners on base.

Kendall Brown and Brynlea Bennett each had three hits in the loss and Brown and Oehlstrom each drove in a pair.

IU Southeast hosts Georgetown Tuesday at 3 p.m
