Grenadiers Split Doubleheader with Rio Grande on Friday

NEW ALBANY, Ind. - The IU Southeast softball team split a doubleheader at home against Rio Grande on Friday, winning the first game 9-6 and falling 13-2 in game two.

Rio Grande scored first in game one, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. IU Southeast tied the game in the bottom of the third when Autumn Oehlstrom singled up the middle, scoring Kendall Brown and Issy Wright.

IU Southeast took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a pinch hit RBI double by Savannah Gaither. Rio Grande tied the game 3-3 in the top of the sixth with an RBI single up the middle.

The Grenadier offense exploded in the bottom of the sixth. Savannah Gaither drove in Hannah Nunemaker with an RBI single to right field to give IU Southeast a 4-3 lead. Kendall Brown singled through the left side, scoring Savannah Gaither to give the Grenadiers a 5-3 advantage.

Cassi Roman followed with a 2-RBI double to put IU Southeast ahead 7-3. Erin Templeman doubled to extend the lead to 8-3, and Brynlea Bennett followed with an RBI single to make it 9-3 IU Southeast.

Rio Grande scored three runs in the top of the seventh, but IU Southeast held on to secure a 9-6 victory. Madison Wathen picked up the win for the Grenadiers, throwing a complete game.

Six Grenadiers finished with an RBI. Cassi Roman, Autumn Oehlstrom, and Savannah Gaither each drove in two runs. Cassi Roman, Erin Templeman, Taylor Hoggatt, and Savannah Gaither doubled in the contest. Kendall Brown stole two bases, and Alaina Winzeler and Savannah Gaither stole one base apiece.

Rio Grande won game two 13-2 in six innings. Kendall Brown and Autumn Oehlstrom homered for IU Southeast, but it was the RedStorm's offense that prevailed. Rio Grande scored 13 runs on 20 hits. The first five hitters in Rio Grande's lineup each had three hits. The last out of the contest was the first strikeout of the game for either side.

IU Southeast moves to 17-11 overall and 10-2 in RSC play. The Grenadiers return to action for a Senior Day doubleheader against WVU Tech on Saturday.
