Grenadiers Sweep WVU Tech on Senior Day
NEW ALBANY, Ind. - The IU Southeast softball team swept WVU Tech on Saturday, a day in which the Grenadiers honored four seniors. Autumn Oehlstrom, Ysa Fox, Brooklyn Gibbs, and Morgan Jenks all took part in the pregame Senior Day festivities. IU Southeast won game one 14-3 in five innings and game two 5-4.
IU Southeast scored first in game one. In the top of the first inning, Autumn Oehlstrom singled to score Kendall Brown to make it 1-0 Grenadiers.
In the bottom of the third, Autumn Oehlstrom hit her tenth home run of the year to give IU Southeast a 3-0 lead. Taylor Hoggatt doubled to left center to drive in Abby Chandler and make it 4-0 Grenadiers. Macie Zink followed with a single to score Taylor Hoggatt and extend the IU Southeast advantage to 5-0.
WVU Tech fought back, scoring three runs in the top of the fourth to narrow the deficit to two runs at 5-3. In the bottom of the fourth, Autumn Oehlstrom drew a bases loaded walk to make it 6-3 IU Southeast. Erin Templeman made it 8-3 with a two run single, and Savannah Gaither drove in two more runs on a double to left field.
Brynlea Bennett doubled to left center to drive in Macie Zink and make it 11-3 IU Southeast. Issy Wright singled to second base and Brynlea Bennett came home to score on a throwing error to make it 12-3. Cassi Roman capped the inning with a two-RBI double to make it 14-3 IU Southeast.
Morgan Jenks came in to record the final two outs, securing an IU Southeast 14-3 victory in five innings. Madison Wathen got the win for IU Southeast, throwing 4.1 innings while striking out seven.
Nine different Grenadiers got a hit, led by Kendall Brown with three. Autumn Oehlstrom drove in four runs to lead IU Southeast. The Grenadiers finished the game with eight extra base hits in four innings.
WVU Tech scored first in game two, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. In the top of the third, the Golden Bears added a run to make it 3-0.
Erin Templeman doubled to left center in the bottom of the fourth, driving in Cassi Roman to make it 3-1. WVU Tech answered with a run in the top of the fifth to make it 4-1.
Issy Wright tripled down the right field line in the bottom of the fifth, driving in Katie Templeman to narrow the Grenadier deficit to 4-2. Issy Wright stole home when the catcher threw to first to complete a strikeout, bringing IU Southeast within one. Autumn Oehlstrom came through once again, doubling to left center to tie the game 4-4.
Macie Zink connected on her first home run of the year in the bottom of the sixth to give IU Southeast a 5-4 lead. WVU Tech loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but Hannah Nunemaker closed the game with a strikeout to secure the 5-4 victory and the doubleheader sweep for IU Southeast.
Madison Wathen started game two as well, throwing the first four innings. Hannah Nunemaker picked up the win, throwing the last three innings of the contest.
Cassi Roman led the Grenadiers with two hits. Autumn Oehlstrom, Erin Templeman, Macie Zink, and Issy Wright drove in a run. Cassi Roman, Autumn Oehlstrom, and Erin Templeman doubled for IU Southeast. Issy Wright recorded a triple, and Macie Zink homered for IU Southeast.
IU Southeast moved to 19-11 overall and 12-2 in RSC play. The Grenadiers return to action on Tuesday for an RSC doubleheader against Brescia.
