Grenadiers Sweep Brescia on Tuesday
NEW ALBANY, Ind. - The IU Southeast softball team won a pair of 8-0 five inning games against Brescia in a doubleheader on Tuesday.
IU Southeast opened the scoring in the second inning of game one. Brynlea Bennett singled down the right field line to score Taylor Hoggatt and Macie Zink to give IU Southeast a 2-0 lead. Kendall Brown followed with a single up the middle to score Brynlea Bennett, making it 3-0.
Cassi Roman drove in Issy Wright with a single to make it 4-0 IU Southeast. Autumn Oehlstrom followed with a single to left center to drive in Kendall Brown and Cassi Roman, extending the Grenadier lead to 6-0. Erin Templeman drove in Hayley McFarling with a single to make it 7-0 IU Southeast.
In the bottom of the fifth, Brynlea Bennett hit a groundball that ricocheted off the shortstop, allowing Savannah Gaither to score and give IU Southeast an 8-0 win in five innings.
Madison Wathen picked up the win for IU Southeast, only allowing one hit in four innings while striking out five. Hannah Nunemaker pitched a perfect fifth inning for the Grenadiers.
Cassi Roman, Erin Templeman, and Savannah Gaither each had two hits in the contest. Autumn Oehlstrom and Brynlea Bennett each drove in two runs. Hayley McFarling and Savannah Gaither each recorded a stolen base.
IU Southeast opened their scoring in the bottom of the second inning in game two as well. Issy Wright singled to drive in Brynlea Bennett, giving the Grenadiers a 1-0 lead. Cassi Roman singled to score Katie Templeman and Issy Wright to extend the lead to 3-0.
Savannah Gaither stole home on a double steal in the bottom of the third to extend the IU Southeast advantage to 4-0. Issy Wright tripled to right center, driving in Katie Templeman to make it 5-0 IU Southeast. Kendall Brown followed with an RBI single to score Issy Wright, making it 6-0.
Savannah Gaither drove in Alaina Winzeler with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the fourth to extend the IU Southeast lead to 7-0. In the bottom of the fifth, Issy Wright singled to right field to drive in Katie Templeman and give IU Southeast their second straight 8-0 win in five innings.
Issy Wright started for IU Southeast, throwing the first two innings. Madison Wathen picked up the win, striking out four in three hitless innings.
Issy Wright went 3-3 with a triple in game two, driving in three runs. Cassi Roman went 2-3 with two RBIs. The Grenadiers stole five bases in game two, led by Katie Templeman with two. Alaina Winzeler, Savannah Gaither, and Issy Wright recorded a steal as well.
IU Southeast moves to 21-11 overall and 14-2 in RSC play. The Grenadiers return to action on Friday in a doubleheader at St. Mary-of-the-Woods.
