Grenadiers Sweep Carlow to Open Busy Week

PITTSBURGH - The IU Southeast softball team swept Carlow on Monday, the first of four scheduled doubleheaders for the Grenadiers this week.

The Grenadiers scored first in game one. With two runners on, Savannah Gaither hit a ball that bounced out of the right fielder's glove and allowed Kendall Brown and Autumn Oehlstrom to score to give IU Southeast a 2-0 lead.

Carlow answered in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs to take a 3-2 lead.  IU Southeast tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the third on a Macie Zink RBI single.

IU Southeast took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth when a hard-hit ball by Savannah Gaither bounced away from the Carlow shortstop, allowing Cassi Roman to score. Savannah Gaither came around to score on another RBI single by Macie Zink, extending the Grenadier lead to 5-3.  

Carlow scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-5 lead. In the top of the sixth, Macie Zink came through once again, delivering yet another RBI single for IU Southeast to tie the game at 6-6. Erin Templeman pinch hit and singled up the middle to drive in two runs and give the Grenadiers an 8-6 lead.

Autumn Oehlstrom launched her twelfth home run of the year in the top of the seventh to give IU Southeast a 10-6 lead, which would be the final score.

Madison Wathen threw a complete game for IU Southeast, striking out eight batters in seven innings of work. Macie Zink led the Grenadiers with three hits and three RBIs. Autumn Oehlstrom drove in two with a home run, and Erin Templeman had two RBIs as well. Savannah Gaither and Macie Zink each stole a base in the win.

IU Southeast scored in the first inning of game two as well. Erin Templeman singled up the middle, driving in Savannah Gaither and Autumn Oehlstrom to give the Grenadiers a 2-0 lead.

Cassi Roman connected on her first home run of the season in the top of the fourth to double the IU Southeast lead to 4-0. 

Erin Templeman delivered yet another RBI hit in the top of the seventh, driving in Alaina Winzeler to give IU Southeast a 5-0 lead. Katie Templeman followed with an RBI groundout to make it 6-0 Grenadiers, which would be the final score in game two.

Brooklyn Gibbs threw a complete game shutout in game two, giving up only four hits in seven innings. Autumn Oehlstrom and Erin Templeman each had three hits in the contest. Erin Templeman drove in three runs, Cassi Roman drove in two, and Katie Templeman added one RBI. Kendall Brown had the lone stolen base for IU Southeast in game two.

IU Southeast moved to 26-13 overall and 18-4 in RSC play with the two wins. The Grenadiers finish their Pittsburgh trip with a doubleheader against Point Park on Tuesday.
