Grenadiers Sweep Brescia On Wednesday

OWENSBORO, Ky. - The IU Southeast softball team swept Brescia in a doubleheader on Wednesday, winning game one 9-1 in six innings and game two 7-3.

The Grenadiers got on the board first in game one. Cassi Roman scored on a fielder's choice and an error to give IU Southeast a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

Macie Zink delivered an RBI single in the top of the third to give the Grenadiers a 2-0 advantage. Katie Templeman also delivered an RBI single in the third, bringing the IU Southeast lead to 3-1.

Cassi Roman drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth to make it 4-0 Grenadiers. Katie Templeman came through in the top of the fifth with another RBI single to increase the IU Southeast lead to 5-0.

With the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, Autumn Oehlstrom launched a grand slam to give IU Southeast a commanding 9-0 lead. Brescia scored a run in the sixth, but the Grenadiers were able to cruise to a 9-1 win in six innings.

Madison Wathen threw a gem in game one, pitching five scoreless innings. Wathen struck out four and gave up only three hits. Hannah Nunemaker closed the game for the Grenadiers in the sixth inning.

Autumn Oehlstrom finished a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-4 with two extra base hits and four RBIs. Katie Templeman had three hits as well, driving in two runs. Erin Templeman and Macie Zink both doubled in the contest, and Issy Wright added a triple in the win. Brynlea Bennett recorded the sole Grenadier stolen base in game one.

IU Southeast scored first in game two as well. Brynlea Bennett delivered an RBI single in the top of the second to give the Grenadiers a 1-0 lead. Brescia tied the game 1-1 with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the third.

The game remained 1-1 until the sixth inning. Issy Wright singled down the right field line to drive in a run and make it 2-1 IU Southeast. Cassi Roman followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-1.

Katie Templeman continued to swing a hot bat, driving an RBI single to center in the top of the seventh to make it 4-1 Grenadiers. A run scored on a McKenzie Rice bunt attempt, and Brynlea Bennett followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to make it 6-1 IU Southeast. Issy Wright doubled home a run to make it 7-1 Grenadiers. Brescia scored two runs in the seventh, but IU Southeast went on to win 7-3 and sweep the doubleheader.

Brooklyn Gibbs recorded her fourth straight complete game, and fifth straight game of throwing six or more innings. Gibbs struck out five in seven innings of work, giving up six hits and only two earned runs.

Issy Wright led the Grenadiers with four hits, including a double, in game two. Brynlea Bennett and Issy Wright both drove in two runs for IU Southeast. Macie Zink, McKenzie Rice, and Issy Wright all stole a base in the victory.

With two wins on Wednesday, IU Southeast's record now sits at 29-14 overall and 21-5 in RSC play. The Grenadiers are scheduled to play a doubleheader against Midway this weekend in an important RSC matchup.
