GRENADIERS GET PAST BRESCIA FRIDAY

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast volleyball team needed five sets but it narrowly defeated Brescia 25-20, 26-24, 21-25, 17-25, 15-10 on Friday.

Macy Graves had 11 kills and Emilee Organ added 10 for the Grenadiers.

The Grenadiers (6-7, 2-1 RSC) jumped out to a 12-10 lead in the first set and then used a 9-3 run to take a 21-13 lead. Macy Graves sparked the run with kills to bookend that stretch and the Grenadiers were aided by four attack errors, one on a block by Emilee Organ.

The Bearcats (0-10, 0-3 RSC) cut the deficit to 23-20 but a kill by Graves and an attack error sent the set the IU Southeast.

The second set was much tighter and the Grenadiers' largest lead was just four points. IU Southeast led 21-17 after a kill by Jennie Malone and a block by Abigail Vogel, but Brescia answered with a 5-0 run to take the lead.

IU Southeast trailed 23-22 but back-to-back kills by Organ and Graves forced set point. After a kill by Joie Porter tied the set at 24, Graves recorded a kill and an error by Porter gave the Grenadiers a two-set lead.

The third and fourth sets IU Southeast had chances to take the lead but could not string enough points together to overcome the Bearcat lead. In the fourth set, IU Southeast trailed 9-7 but a 9-2 run by the Bearcats put the set out of reach.

The Grenadiers used a spark to gain some momentum in the fifth set when Delaney Nichols and Emilee Organ had back-to-back kills and then an attack error extended the IU Southeast led to 8-3.

Later in the set, Santina Schembra put the match of reach with three-straight aces for a 12-7 lead. Two kills by Nichols forced match point and an attack error won it for the Grenadiers.

Three of Nichols' five kills came in the deciding set. Schembra had a career high five aces in the match and the Grenadiers recorded 11 in the contest.

Lexie Fisher had 35 digs to lead the Grenadiers, Schembra had 11 and Cate Murphy had 10 digs and 17 assists. Hannah Brown led the Grenadiers with 23 assists, a career high.
