GRENADIERS FALL TO MIDWAY TUESDAY
MIDWAY, Ky. – The IU Southeast volleyball team fell to Midway University 25-21, 25-22, 25-23 on Tuesday.
Emilee Organ had 10 kills, Delaney Nichols had six and Macy Graves added four in the loss.
The first set was tightly contested to start as neither team could pull away early. IU Southeast (7-8, 3-2 RSC) used an 8-2 run to take a 17-12 advantage. Aces by Jennie Malone and Hannah Brown as well as kills by Malone and Nichols propelled the Grenadiers ahead.
Midway (9-1, 4-1 RSC) used a 5-0 run later in the set to take a 21-19 advantage, and the Eagles went on to win the first set 25-21.
Midway jumped out to an early 10-6 advantage in the second set and used their momentum to increase the lead to 18-9. Facing a 21-13 deficit, the Grenadiers rallied, using a 7-0 run to shrink the lead to 21-20. Kills from Nichols, Organ and Audrey LaMaster as well as three Midway attack errors helped bring the Grenadiers within one.
After the Eagles increased their lead to 23-20, an ace from Santina Schembra and another Midway attack error brought the Grenadiers back within one, but the Eagles went on to score the final two points to take the second set 25-22.
The third set was also very close, as neither team led by more than three points throughout the entire set. Midway's largest lead was 16-13, but IU Southeast used a 6-0 run to take their biggest lead at 19-16. Three of the six points in the run came from kills by Organ. Midway responded with a 5-0 run of their own, taking a 21-19 lead.
The Grenadiers jumped out in front 23-22, but a 3-0 run gave Midway the victory in the third and final set.
Lexie Fisher had 20 digs to lead IU Southeast. Cate Murphy led the team with 10 assists. The Grenadiers added four aces in the match, two from Brown and one each from Schembra and Malone.
IU Southeast travels to IU East Saturday at 1 p.m.
